Truck compressor unloading – regular deliveries – logical flow
1. Arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled unloading time.
1.1. If delivery occurs outside the site working hours or the unloading site is fully automatic / unmanned you might me required to swipe a card or type an access code at the gate in order to enter the site. Once on the site, drive to the unloading point and continue from step 6.
2. Safely park your vehicle in the designated lorry parking area and:
- record in Transics the details of your unloading as per the requirements;
- fill in the driving report (the blue binder with kørselsrapport forms);
3. Before stepping out of the truck, make sure you wear an Anneberg Transport branded outfit / high visibility vest and safety shoes;
4. Run a final check to ensure:
- You have all the required ADR bitumen specific PPE;
- You have all the required load documentation;
- You have all the client issued RFID cards for you (the driver), the truck and the trailer (if the case);
- The unloading equipment is in place and functional (e.g. spill collection buckets, compressor, the right connectors and/or adaptors for the job, metal hoses with lids at both ends, the unloading pipe is clear of product with the lid on and the safety pin in the correct on-the-top position);
- No product is leaking and there is no visible damage of the tanker;
- All the air ducts are empty, clean and can be operated;
- All the valves are closed but not stuck;
- All the lid are closed
- The emergency “butterfly” valve is functional and promptly activated by the emergency button;
- There is no smoke / fire present (from the vehicle or in the nearby vicinity);
- Both the truck and the trailer are leveled;
- The feets of the trailer’s landing gear are fully retracted;
- The truck engine and the compressor are turned off;
- There are no cables, or hoses hanging from or under the vehicle;
- The trailer safety handrail is lowered and the top covers are closed;
- Both the truck and trailer fire extinguishers are present and within the validity date;
- All the tyres are properly inflated and in good shape;
- All the wheel nuts are present and tightened;
- All the ADR placarding and markings are still in place and complete (orange plates and hazard diamonds);
- The temperature gauge shows an acceptable variance from the standard listed in the load documentation;
5. Report to drivers reception with the following:
- All the client issued RFID cards for the driver, the truck and the trailer (if the case);
- Any booking number provided by the dispatch office;
- All the load documents handed over from the loading site (e.g. the CMR, the invoice, the product safety sheet etc.);
- Company/Truck’s phone;
- A pen and paper for taking notes;
5.1 Before being allowed on the unloading area, you will be usually required to use a weighbridge. Instructions will be further provided in this regard.
6. You might be required to wear the personal protective equipment (PPE) equipment before your access is granted on the site (suit up in the parking lot, outside the main gate). If not explicit requirements in place, it is mandatory that you suit up it before entering a risk areas (unloading zone) or before you engage in any unloading preparation activity.
NOTE: Failure to wear the PPE might promptly and swiftly result in you being evacuated from the site and permanently banned from returning.
7. When instructed, proceed to the unloading point and position the truck as per the requirements (e.g. inside some particular pavement markings, without blocking entrances, fire hydrants, access ways or different loading / unloading points etc.). Before deciding on the final parking position make sure that the fumes collection hose and the product delivery hose can be connected at both ends (at a distance below their length), without unnecessary stretch or tensions.
8. Verify that the product transported in the tanker correspond with the product name displayed on the labels / visuals on the indicated storage tank and also correspond with the allocated unloading/access point into the site storage tank.
NOTE: Unloading in the wrong tanker will result in product mixing, which will render the whole quantity in the site storage tank unusable. This mistakes occur way to often, and carry a heavy financial penalty for the company!
9. Verify the capacity of the site storage tank and the current loading levels. Make sure that the quantity of the product you transport will fit in the site storage tank below the maximum load capacity of 90% (or below the displayed safe working tank capacity if lower). If unsure, DO NOT start unloading! Return to the drivers reception, communicate the concerns and wait for further instructions. If outside working hours or unmanned / automatic site call the dispatch office.
NOTE: If an overflow alarm (strobe + sound) is triggered you MUST stop the loading, clear the hoses with low pressure and report to the drivers reception for further instructions (or call the dispatch office). As a driver you are responsible to monitor the maximum loading capacity. Overflow can occur even if no overflow alarm is triggered (e.g. malfunction). In case of a product spill, the contracts stipulate penalties for the company!
10. An emergency shower should be available between 6 and 20 metres from the discharge point. If the emergency shower is within 6 metres, make sure you run a functional test.
11. By operating the air suspension of the truck, raise the back of the truck and lower the trailer suspension in such a way that the product will naturally collect towards the main bottom unloading valve. Place the wheel chocks and, as a extra precaution, you can also engage the trailer’s parking brakes.
12. Unload the hoses and check again that you have the proper connectors and/or adapters. Pay attention to the weight of the hoses. If uncharacteristically heavy, they might contain hardened product and thus might be clogged. Use a blowtorch to heat the hoses and clean them before proceeding any further.
13. Place a spill collection bucket or tray under the connectors, both at the site and the truck end.
14. Make sure, again, all the valves are in close position and that the ducts are cold. If not, report a near miss and take the necessary corrective measures.
NOTE: If you don’t have the full face visor closed and the long gauntlet gloves on, you are required to use them from this point onwards.
15. With care, slowly open the lid from the connector BCM1 (MKTW80) of the unloading pipe of your tanker and the lid of the VKTW80 connector of the hose.
16. Check/clean any marks of dried product that might prevent a perfect coupling from both the hose and the unloading pipe. By looking inside the unloading pipe and the hose (along the length) visually check if there is a blockage on the tanker unloading pipe or any of the hose ends. If necessary, use a blowtorch to heat the bitumen and clear the clog before proceeding any further.
17. Check the integrity of the gasket (the rubber seal inside the MKTW80 coupling) and, if necessary, change them to prevent any possible leakage.
18. Connect the hose to the BCM1 (MKTW80) connector – the unloading pipe. Make sure that gasket is firmly pressed between the connectors (there shall be no wiggle space). It is important that the handle on the outer ring of the MKTW80 connector is closed in on-the-top position. If the safety pin of the lock is unreliable, secure the handle to the connector with a zip tie.
19. Repeat the steps 13-16 at the other end of the metallic hose (the site end).
20. Place under the hose, one of the jacks provided on site or use one of the leakage collection bucket to elevate the hose from the ground. This shall reduce the pull effect of the product weight on the connectors.
19. Place the air duct valves in the following configuration: all closed except BVF1.1 (if present).
20. Connect the compressor connector to BCF1 (MKTW50) on the air ducts of the tanker. Turn on the compressor and notice the high pressure safety valve releasing the pressure at very short intervals. Open the valve BVB5. The high pressure safety valve shall stop and you shall be able to observe fumes coming out of the site storage tanker.
20.1 If the high pressure safety valve keep releasing the pressure at very short intervals, or resume releasing the pressure at longer intervals troubleshot the product transfer hoses and pipes between the your tanker and the site tanker. For your safety and to prevent any incident on site, DO NOT open the main bottom valve (to release the product) unless you are 100% sure that the product will reach the site storage tank.
21. Close the BVB5 valve and open the BVT2.1. The high pressure safety valve will stop and you shall be able observe the pressure slowly raising in tanker on the pressure gauge. If the safety pressure valve blows out at regular intervals, troubleshoot the valves, the tanker air ducts or the hoses for any blockages.
22. As soon as the pressure in the tank reaches 1.6 bar open the emergency “butterfly” valve, slowly open the main bottom valve to allow the product flow.
23. Observe the hose filling with product and notice any leakages occuring between the connection.
23.1. If there are any leakages between any of the connectors… close the main bottom valve and place the air duct valves in the following configuration: all closed except BVF1.1 and BVB5. This configuration will allow the leftover product from the hose to be pushed into the site storage tank. Allow 2-4 minutes before stopping the compressor so the cold air will solidify any product leftovers. Tighten / reposition the connectors or change the gasket if needed.
NOTE: For your own safety DO NOT touch, tighten, reposition or disconnect the hose or the connectors with the product flowing!
23.2. If no leakages, you will notice the metal hose heating and any bitumen residue on the outside layer melting. Remain near the main bottom valve ready to press the emergency button anytime during the unload (this is a legal requirement).
24. While the product leaves your tanker you will notice the level of the trailer raising. Once no product in the tanker you will notice short tremur in the metallic hose. In order to complete the unloading and ensure that no products remain in the tanker, you are advise to complete close the valve, wait for 3-7 second (for residual product to collect behind the main bottom valve and quickly reopen the main bottom valve (partially). The difference in pressure will engage the rest of the product. You shall repeat this maneuver 4-5 times before you finally close the main bottom valve.
25. With the compressor running, you will place the air duct valves in the following configuration: all close except BVF1.1 and BVB5. A period of 25-60 seconds will be enough to make sure there is no significant quantity of residual product is left on the product unloading pipe and along the hoses. Allow an extra 2-4 minutes before stopping the compressor so the cold air will solidify any product leftovers.
26. Stop the compressor and kill the truck engine.
NOTE: If you don’t have the full face visor closed and the long gauntlet gloves on, you are required to use them from this point onwards.
27. You will slowly and carefully open the BCM1 (MKTW80) connector between the your tanker product unloading pipe and the hose and quickly place the VKTW80 connector of the hose under the connector of your tanker`s product unloading pipe to collect any residual product.
28. Once the leakage becames dripping you can slowly raise the disconnected end of the hose and attach it to the nearby pulley mechanism. Raise the hose fully vertical and allow 1-3 minutes for the product from the hose to drain into the site inlet.
29. Disconnect the hose from the site inlet and allow any dripping to be collected into a leakage collection container/bucket. If the bucket has a significant quantity of bitumen (more than 2/3), approach the site on-duty representative and dispose it properly. If no disposal facility available on the delivery site, let the bitumen solidify, and take the bucket with you, at your next loading site (e.g. Total Brunsbuttel). They will replace the bucket with a new one and handle the disposal of the solidified bitumen.
30. If any spill/leakages have occurred during the unloading is the responsibility of the driver to collect and dispose them correctly.
31. Attach the all the lids to the hose, clean it (if necessary) and store it properly on the designated trailer compartment.
32. Clean and close with the lid the BCM1 (MKTW80) on the product unloading pipe of the tanker. Under the penalty of a fine, it is important that the handle of the MKTW80 outer ring connector is closed in on-the-top position during the travel over a public road. If the safety pin of the lock is unreliable, secure the handle to the connector with a zip tie.
33. Clean the areas around the product unloading pipe of the tanker. Under the penalty of a fine, it is important that no traces of product are visible while in transit over a public road.
34. Collect and store all the tools used. It is the driver’s responsibility to leave the unloading area tidy.
35. Place the air duct valves in the following configuration: all closed except BVT2.1 and BVM3.1. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Failing this step might result in tanker being damaged by the negative pressure difference resulted during the cooling process (vacuum implosion).
36. Level both the truck and the trailer.
36. Make sure you will properly park the truck on the parking lot before heading for the Drivers reception.
37. Before exiting the site you will be required to drive on the weighbridge again. If not required, we still recommend you to always weight the truck before leaving the site. Any deviation higher than 3.5% (300-500 kg) from the empty truck known weight (12t – 15t depending on the truck + trailer configuration, you can find your actual truck weight in the load documents) represent leftover product that must be unloaded on the site. Return to the unloading site, investigate the issue and if necessary start again from step 8.
38. At the driver’s reception you might be required to sign a sets of documents to confirm the delivery. A delivery signed original of the load documents has to be returned to you. Place all this documents in one of the provided envelopes (which, as instructed, will have to be expedited at the end of the week, along with all other documents).
38.1. If unloading outside working hours, or on unmanned / automatic site you will usually find in the close proximity of the unloading point, a mailbox. Place your load documents in the mailbox. Overlooking this step will create a large (and potentially costly) number of issues across the whole logistic chain. For this particular step, no site representative signature confirmation will be required.
39. Undress the PPA and use the wash room to remove any traces of dry product or cleaning agent that might have entered in contact with your skin.
40. Finalize the Transics record of the unloading process and write the end time on the driving report (kørselsrapport).
41. Run a final check to ensure:
- You have loaded all the PPE and the tools in the vehicle;
- You have collected all the driver, truck, trailer and load, cards or documents;
- No product is leaking (legal requirement);
- All the lids are hertethically sealing the valves (e.g. the MK/VK TW50/80) at both the main bottom valve and the air duct (legal requirement);
- The manhole lid is closed and tightened (legal requirement);
- All the air ducts valves are in the correct road position for a hot & empty tanker (all closed except BVT2.1 and BVM3.1);
- The emergency “butterfly” valve is in close position with the safety on (legal requirement);
- Both the truck and the trailer are leveled;
- The feets of the trailer’s landing gear are fully retracted;
- The truck compressor is turned off;
- There are no cables, or hoses hanging from or under the vehicle;
- The trailer safety handrail is lowered and the top covers are closed and secured in position;
- Both the truck and trailer fire extinguishers are present;
- All the tyres are properly inflated and in good shape;
- All the wheel nuts are present and tightened;
42. If necessary, only when the temperature in the tank drop below 100℃, remove the orange marking and the hazard diamonds placarding. This will allow you to travel up to the 90 km/h, as opposed to the 80 km/h speed restriction for ADR loads.
43. Leave the site and wait for further instructions from the dispatch office.
